“A cluster of beliefs and dictates which for scientists in a particular disciple influence what should be studied, how research

should be done [and] how results should be interpreted” (Bryman, 1988)

  • incommensurable – inconsistent with each other – divergent
  • Paradigm driven approach – begin with paradigm and develop questions and methods
  •  Pragmatic approach – start with questions that need answering and choose methods
  • In education often questions come from practical and professional issues/problems (pragmatic)
  • Bryant (2012) asserts not all research is paradigm-driven
